Designed specifically to educate people with the must-know information to support a loved one or a colleague who might be experiencing mental health problems.
What You Will Learn:
After this session participants will:
- Have a greater awareness of the prevalence of mental health problems.
- Have a stronger sense of empathy for the impact of mental health problems on individuals.
- Have a good understanding of the common mental health issues relevant to workplaces including anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use problems.
- Be able to identify warning signs that someone may be becoming unwell or deteriorating.
- Be able to respond appropriately, knowing what to say and what not to say in communicating with the person.
- Know the limits of your role, and how to maintain the role of colleague (and not counsellor).
- Know where to refer the person to access further professional help if required.
- Know how to respond in mental health emergency situations, particularly if the person may be considering suicide.
- Know how to look after yourself in the process of assisting a colleague to access help.
- Have skills to communicate effectively with a distressed person to provide emotional and practical support in the first instance.
