What You Will Learn:

After this session participants will:

  • Have a greater awareness of the prevalence of mental health problems.
  • Have a stronger sense of empathy for the impact of mental health problems on individuals.
  • Have a good understanding of the common mental health issues relevant to workplaces including anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use problems.
  • Be able to identify warning signs that someone may be becoming unwell or deteriorating.
  • Be able to respond appropriately, knowing what to say and what not to say in communicating with the person.
  • Know the limits of your role, and how to maintain the role of colleague (and not counsellor).
  • Know where to refer the person to access further professional help if required.
  • Know how to respond in mental health emergency situations, particularly if the person may be considering suicide.
  • Know how to look after yourself in the process of assisting a colleague to access help.
  • Have skills to communicate effectively with a distressed person to provide emotional and practical support in the first instance.
