Mental Health Conversations for Managers


This course is designed specifically for leaders, managers and supervisors, to give you an introduction to workplace mental health, and show you how to identify and respond to a team member who might be experiencing a mental health problem.

Designed specifically to educate people with the must-know information to support a loved one or a colleague who might be experiencing mental health problems.

What You Will Learn:

After this session participants will:

  • Have a greater awareness of the prevalence of mental health problems.
  • Have a stronger sense of empathy for the impact of mental health problems on individuals.
  • Have a good understanding of the common mental health issues relevant to workplaces including anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use problems.
  • Be able to identify warning signs that someone may be becoming unwell or deteriorating.
  • Be able to respond appropriately, knowing what to say and what not to say in communicating with the person.
  • Know the limits of your role, and how to maintain the role of colleague (and not counsellor).
  • Know where to refer the person to access further professional help if required.
  • Know how to respond in mental health emergency situations, particularly if the person may be considering suicide.
  • Know how to look after yourself in the process of assisting a colleague to access help.
  • Have skills to communicate effectively with a distressed person to provide emotional and practical support in the first instance.
